2nd century AD. A silver ring with hoop composed of concave facets, each later inscribed with a single letter or symbol, of which only the letter combination AVT and VEX is legible. See Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 224, for type. 3.21 grams, 27.02mm overall, 24.18mm internal diameter (approximate size British Z+4, USA 14 1/2, Europe 33.83, Japan 32) (1"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously in a UK collection since the 1980s. This type (type III variant 1 of the Ruseva-Slokoska classification) is common among gold as well as among silver and bronze rings, most being inscribed.
