139 x 35,7 cm Condition Cao Guangzhen (1864-1937), China, dated 1926, Calligraphy after Su Dongpo. Four hanging scrolls, ink on paper. Signature by the artist on the fourth scroll: "In the tenth month of the bingyin year (1926), after a calligraphy by Su Dongpo, Weisou Cao Guangzhen." Two seals: "Cao Guangzhen", "Written by Weisou after sixty" (Weisou liushi hou suo shu). Cao Guangzhen, style name Weisou, was from Changsha and earned his jinshi degree in 1892. He once held office in the educational department of Jilin province, but became mainly known as an excellent poet and calligrapher. Here, he has copied the first part of the most famous poem by Su Dongpo (1036-1101), the "First Trip to the Red Cliff" in his own handwriting.-Acquired at Nagel, Stuttgart, 11th Nov 2000, auction 19A, no. 2253-Minor restorations
