LOT 870 A VIVID ANONYMOUS KANO SCHOOL PAINTING DEPICTING THE LEGEND OF THE OEYAMA DEMON, Japan, 17th ct. - Handscroll, ink and vivid colours along with goldon paper, eight paintings alternating with corresponding texts telling the legend of the Oeyama demon called Shûten Dôji. Shûten Dôji, an ogre, loves kidnapping aristocratic ladies and servants. The scroll at hand describes how the hero Minamoto Yoritomo (948-1021) and his friends Usui Sadamitsum, Ueda Suetaka, Watanabe No Tsuna, Sakata no Kintoki und Fujiwara Yasumasa try to rescue the ladies. Painting and calligraphy are typical of the 17th ct. figure painting and the elegant and fluent composition hints at a skilled Kano school artist.
