LOT 1146 EMAKIMONO DEPICTING "THE CONTEST OF PHALLI AND WINDS", Japan, 19th ct. - Handscroll, ink and colours on paper, the work being a copy of the 12th ct. artist Toba Sôjo who created a satirical contest of phalli and flatulences "Yôbutsu kurabe / hôhi gassen". The original artwork was kept in the Toji temple in Kyoto. The scroll combines text and image to criticise the Japanese society and its registers. The copy at hand names a person called Horuisai Danei Minamoto no Arisato as painter and refers to a date of the seventh year Kaei (i.e. 1854) - Provenance: From a South german private collection, purchased before 1990 - Paper mounting, traces of worm holes, minor creases, few stains
