The figure is shown seated on a rocky outcrop, wearing red robe with his hands resting on laps. His contemplative expression and long beard recognise him as Guan Gong, who is one of the most famous military generals and a symbol of courage and loyalty in Chinese culture. Cizhou kiln was the largest folk kiln system in the northern region and gradually developed its own distinctive style during the various firing practices of pottery and porcelain over a long period of time, mainly producing domestic wares, and figure statues. His maternal grandfather, Hisashi Ueno, began working at the Tianjin Concession Consulate in 1913. During his 27 years in China, he collected a large number of Chinese works of art, with a wide range of interests, particularly in porcelain and metal pieces.
