The rectangular mouth with a straight rim, long neck and convex belly with a high flared footrim and an upright lower skirt. The neck and foot are decorated with a reticulated brocade ground and cicada motifs, and the abdomen is decorated with animal-face motifs. This vessel is modelled after the bronze Gu vessel, which was prevalent in the mid to late Shang dynasty as a drinking vessel. During the Qing dynasty, Gu vessel inspired by bronze vessels were made in jade, porcelain, enamelled ware and other handicrafts. Some of the jade wares of this shape from the Qing court were also lined with bronze or paper goblets with several sets of holes for use in flower arrangements.
