Japan, 19th century
Finely painted in ink and colors on silk and mounted as a hanging scroll with a silk brocade frame, the jiku (roller ends) carved from bone. Depicted are two elegantly seated courtiers, dressed in elaborately layered kimonos, lavishly decorated showing various scrolling and floral designs, with
their nihongami hairstyles and large and splendid hair ornaments, wearing the traditional oshiroi make-up.
