Feminine curves drift upward into a vast neck eventually meeting the rectangular lid and Qilin bust finial. Prowling Qilin handles flank either side of the neck. In Chinese tradition, the Qilin rare appearance often accords with the looming birth or death of a sage or memorable ruler. Qilin is a combination of the two characters qi “male,” and lin, “female.” Intricately incised symmetric patterns adorn the entirety of the vase giving a rich quality to the piece. Nephrite has mottled appearance with scattered inclusions along with a beautiful transparent chalk-white tone. This superb example of ancient Chinese craftsmanship is elevated by a wide flanged foot base.
