Two Chinese Buddhist textiles dating from the Republic period. Both textiles appear to come from the same textile set illustrating incarnations of the Panchen Lamas, with the set itself based on an original, 18th century set of paintings from Nartang Monastery. One textile depicts Padmasambhava, a pre-incarnation of the Panchen Lama, as the central figure with various figures around him including Panjarnata with a kila peg as his lower body. The other textile depicts Subhuti, a student of Shakyamuni Buddha and a pre-incarnation of the Panchen Lama, as the central figure. He is surrounded by many figures, including the Guardian Kings and creatures like garuda. Both textiles are matted and framed. Dimensions are: the sight area measures 26 inches tall X 15 inches wide, 66 cm X 38.1 cm, while the frame measures 34 inches tall X 23 inches wide, 86.4 cm X 58.4 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: The textile with Padmasambhava has fading and sun bleaching as well as staining and loose threads. The textile with Subhuti is in good condition. A reminder that all lots are sold as-is. We have sought to record the changes in the condition of this piece after its initial manufacture as diligently as possible; however, as stated in our terms, condition reports are statements of opinion and not representations or warranties. Oakridge Auction Gallery bears no responsibility for any error or omission. Provenance: From a private New York City collection. Notes: High resolution photos can be found here.
