Francesco Bartolozzi, RA, Italian 1727-1815- Study for a medal depicting a bust of Professor Francis Hutcheson, three-quarters, right, long flowing wig, in professorial robes, After Antonio Selvi (Italian d.1755); pencil and red chalk on paper, signed in the artist's initials (lower centre), inscribed 'FRANC . HVTCHESON . PHIL . MOR . IN . ACAD . GLASGVÃ . PVB . PROF.' the sheet 9.5 x 9.1 cm., the sheet including mount 14 x 13.7 cm. Note: The inscription translates as 'Francis Hutcheson, Public Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Glasgow.' Hutcheson (1694-1746) was an Irish philosopher born in Ulster to a family of Scottish Presbyterians and became known as one of the founding fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment. He was Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University and his âSystem of Moral Philosophyâ is set forth in two volumes, published in 1755 by his son. He was an important influence on the works of several significant Enlightenment thinkers, including David Hume and Adam Smith. The bronze medal by Antonio Selvi, dating to 1746, is housed in the British Museum, London [M.8546]. It was executed at Florence under the direction of Hutchesonâs pupil Basil Hamilton (later Earl of Selkirk) and then cast by Selvi from a wax model. For Bartolozziâs stipple engraving of the subject, see National Portrait Gallery, London [NPG D4399]. The portrait is said to be a good likeness. Please refer to department for condition report
