本器为玉剑饰中的剑首，为镶嵌于剑柄持握底端之物。剑饰玉从上到下依所在位置分别称为剑首、剑琫（格）、剑璏（璲）和剑珌，可上溯自春秋晚期至战国时期，因成年的贵族男子几乎人人佩剑，以玉来装饰剑器的风气便应运而生。此件表面鸡骨白，呈圆饼形，外缘规整，正面呈凹状内圆四周以剔地浅浮雕谷纹，突起弧形圆点排列密集，有阴刻线随谷纹旋转雕出。
