Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A hand-built Maranon style pottery vessel with a sizable body in the form of a conch shell. The shell rests on a planar base, the ovoid body is rounded on one side with an overhanging lip to the other, and the spiraling apex incised and painted a sienna brown upon the creamy white surface. To the front and side are glyphs, a diamond shape, and an abstract rendering of what could be a face of the fanged and enigmatic deity known as the Staff God. A large and symbolic example of Chavin pottery!
