**Originally Listed At $650** Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java / Borneo, Dayak peoples, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A curated ensemble of four hand-carved wood guardians or Hampatongs. The first and largest of the group is of a standing anthropomorphic figure, perhaps a shaman believed to have been a medicinal charm. The figure stands upright on delineated legs and leans slightly to one side, with one hand wrapped around its lower belly. The smallest of the group is similar in form to the largest and presents with both hands over its abdomen. The third piece is a finely carved wooden Kris (keris) handle in the form of the Prince Figure or Putrasatu - depicting a two-sided squatting demon and ancestral figure. On one side, a slight grimace bares a discreet smile through shut lips. On its verso, there is also a face but with spiraled eyes. The fourth piece is made from ungulate bone and presents flaring orange hues behind a mahogany finish. The two-sided figure features two identical faces and arms joined at its chest area, perhaps in prayer or offering. Size: 1" W x 6.25" H (2.5 cm x 15.9 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand. The word Hampatong comes from the Dayak word "patong" which means statue. Most Hampatong figures portray ancestors and supernatural guardians from the Dayak religious system. These guardians are believed to prevent evil spirits, especially those bringing illness from entering the community. Hampatongs also serve as temporary homes for the spirits of the deceased, where they briefly stay before beginning their journey to the afterlife. Each one has its own specific purpose, as they all represent specific ancestral spirits or deities.
