**Originally Listed At $1000** Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. A hand-built pottery figural vessel depicting a lord king seated with crossed legs, both hands atop bent knees, while wearing a minimalist loincloth and lavender-hued tunic. The expressive visage exhibits almond-shaped eyes surrounded by incised wrinkles and a furrowed brow as well as a wrinkled nose, grimacing mouth, cupped ears, and a thick headdress with 2 baluster-form terminals and a cross-form back strap. Deep orange hues form the ground atop which the purple and cream pigments are presented and make this an attractive example of early Moche artistry. Size: 4.25" W x 5.7" H (10.8 cm x 14.5 cm) Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Abrasions and fading to pigment, with retooling to some finer details, and light earthen deposits within some recessed areas. Nice preservation to overall figural form.
