Red silk with multi-colored silk and gold brocade threads, backside lined with green satin. China, late Qing dynasty

This large embroidery featuring a textured red background shows a frontal dragon in the upper part and a pair of facing dragons among rock and waves below. The dragons are depicted on a dense background cloud pattern with flaming pearls, phoenixes and auspicious symbols, partly in ‘Peking Knot’ stitch. The lower part same as the upper hem with lishui stripes in fine shaded tones of red, blue, sea-green and yellow.
