Ca. 1100-1200 AD. A bronze ewer with inverted piriform body, resting on a low foot, is adorned with a mouth modeled in the shape of an oil lamp, which elegantly complements the long channeled spout for pouring. Two protruding hoops attached to the sides of the mouth add an extra decorative touch to the piece, while the elaborately shaped handle with a single twist at the lower section and a protruding knob at the top serves as a comfortable thumb's rest. One of the most notable features of this ewer is its oil-lamp spout, which was a common design element in Seljuk metalwork. These spouts served both functional and aesthetic purposes, allowing the user to pour liquids smoothly while adding a touch of elegance and refinement to the overall design. The spout of this ewer is decorated with intricate arabesques, while a band of ornamental design runs around the base, adding to the piece's overall beauty and sophistication. Islamic metalwork during the Seljuk period was renowned for its exceptional quality and beauty. Metalworkers of the era were skilled in a range of techniques, including casting, engraving, and inlay, allowing them to create intricate designs and patterns that reflected the rich cultural and historical heritage of Islamic art. Size: L:200mm / W:130mm ; 500gProvenance: Private London collection of Early Islamic Art - M.A.; formerly acquired on the UK art market since the 1980s.
