Crowned Buddha images first appear in East India. However, this remarkable headdress is distinctly Burmese, emerging initially in paintings and reliefs of the late-Pagan period. A similar larger bronze can be found in the British Museum (OA.1969.2-11.1), and another published in Pal,Sensuous Immortals, 1978, p. 157, no. 92b.
