本品以端石精雕而成，色泽莹润，砚堂开阔，质坚静雅，扶之棉滑，呵之而成研。砚首作云形墨池，周围衬如意祥云。砚背镌文：“与君永结翰墨绿，学海文澜子孙保”“吴东发铭”。
吴东发（1747-1803），字侃叔，浙江海盐人。嘉庆三年（1798）岁贡。性高洁，不慕荣利。工书画，精鉴赏，兼篆刻。诗格奇崛磊落。精金石考订之学。出钱大昕之门，并受知于阮元。山水师吴镇、沈周，极苍莽之致。张廷济跋其山水草虫各四帙，谓系其三十二岁所作。风骨清俊，设色浓艳，虽穷老尽气，沈埋于调铅杀粉数十年者，终不能到。卒年五十七。著尊道堂诗钞、耘庐诗钞。
