A STILL LIFE BY KAKUEN, Japan, 16th ct., a painting of two melons (uri) and a spray with peaches (momo), ink on paper, one seal: Kakuen - The seal of Kakuen is mentioned and illustrated im Kôga Bikô, 1850, published by Okisada Asaoka, Vol. 3, p. 2077. Seal and iconography of this painting as well as the subject point to the fact that the name Kakuen belonged to an artist that devoted his life to Zen. Another painter, Nôami (1397-1471), whose name is mentioned on the kiri box that contains this painting, has painted similar still lifes, cannot be connected with the seal: Kakuen. Never the less, the inscriptions on the old box (17th Ct. or later) are important for the history of art and is read as follows: : 'Kashi-e Noâmi sakuhitsu Kano gaiki tôbhun (Fruits painted by Nôami). Two labels attached to one side of this box: ''.uri' and below: Nô. (ami?). One seal on the back of the lower scroll stick: Kashiwa-shi tosho-in, seal of the library of the Kashiwa family - Provenance: Acquired in the German art trade, 08.10.1998, invoice copy is available upon request - Minor wear, slightly rest., mounted as hanging scroll with ivory ends

ATTRIBUTED TO IKENO TAIGA (Japan, 1723-1776), a painting of a plum tree, ink on paper, signed Kyuka Tsutomu and sealed Taiga no do, Shuhei, shotei ko - Ikeno Taiga, was a painter and calligrapher working in Kyoto. First he studied the paintings of the Tosa School, but soon he was inspired by the characteristics of the Nanga School of painting. He studied under Yanagisawa Kien and Sakaki Hyakusen, who taught him the techniques of finger painting as well as under Ekaku Hakuin. In 1750, he studied Chinese painting in Endo, where he was inspired by the painting manual of the mustard seed. Ikeno Taiga painted his most renowned works between 1759 - 1765. SOGA NICHOKUAN (active ca. 1625 - 1660), a painting of a pair of herons under a leafless willow. Ink on paper, signed and three seals, the central one: Nichokuan - The biographical data of Nichokuan is not evident, it is believed that he was painting actively between 1625 - 1660. His father Soga Chokuan lived around 1600, most probably descending from the Soga painter family in Echizen. Nichokuan was well known and recognised for his landscape and floral paintings as well as for his works depicting birds. Sealed: Kanô Motonobu - Kanô Mtonobu was the son of the founder of the Kanô School, Kanô Masanobu. During his life he obtained several honorary degrees such as Ôi no suke and Echizen no kami as well as the title Hôgen. Besides for the Imperial court, he also painted by order of the arictocracy as well as wealthy families. One record in a document proves that he also painted fans such as this one with the playing kids. This documents mentions his name together with the famous fan maker, Hasuike Hideaki in Tôfuku - Traces of age, rest., mounted as hanging scroll with ivory scroll ends

A VIVID ANONYMOUS KANO SCHOOL PAINTING DEPICTING THE LEGEND OF THE OEYAMA DEMON, Japan, 17th ct. - Handscroll, ink and vivid colours along with goldon paper, eight paintings alternating with corresponding texts telling the legend of the Oeyama demon called Shûten Dôji. Shûten Dôji, an ogre, loves kidnapping aristocratic ladies and servants. The scroll at hand describes how the hero Minamoto Yoritomo (948-1021) and his friends Usui Sadamitsum, Ueda Suetaka, Watanabe No Tsuna, Sakata no Kintoki und Fujiwara Yasumasa try to rescue the ladies. Painting and calligraphy are typical of the 17th ct. figure painting and the elegant and fluent composition hints at a skilled Kano school artist. A VIVID ANONYMOUS KANO SCHOOL PAINTING DEPICTING THE LEGEND OF THE OEYAMA DEMON, Japan, 17th ct. - Handscroll, ink and vivid colours along with goldon paper, eight paintings alternating with corresponding texts telling the legend of the Oeyama demon called Shûten Dôji. Shûten Dôji, an ogre, loves kidnapping aristocratic ladies and servants. The scroll at hand describes how the hero Minamoto Yoritomo (948-1021) and his friends Usui Sadamitsum, Ueda Suetaka, Watanabe No Tsuna, Sakata no Kintoki und Fujiwara Yasumasa try to rescue the ladies. Painting and calligraphy are typical of the 17th ct. figure painting and the elegant and fluent composition hints at a skilled Kano school artist.
