In Norse mythology Mjölnir, was created by the dwarfs and given to Thor when they were making weapons for the gods. When thrown it has the ability to create thunder and lightning. Only Thor can wield the weapon and he uses it in his battles against the giants. In the Viking age Thor's Hammer amulets were worn to invoke the protection of the god and also became the most important symbol of Scandinavian paganism in its opposition to Christianity.
