AN UNUSUAL REPOUSSE BRUSH WASHER, QING
China, 19th century or earlier. The circular copper and metal washer with a finely incised, floral border and an embossed and fire-gilt sinuous chilong in high relief, lurking above the vessel’s thin lip.

Provenance: From an old English estate.
Condition: Extensive wear and patina, dents and nicks here and there, some very small dings to embossed sections, traces of use. Old soiling inside.

Note that the mouth of the chilong is open, hence water can be filled into its body so that the washer may also be used as a water dropper.
