A PARCEL GILT BIRD FINIAL, DINGSHI
China, Song dynasty or earlier. The finial is made of a hollow cast alloy as a recumbent bird clutching a short open pole. The feathers are neatly incised and parcel-gilt as well as the round, bulging eyes and the closed aquiline beak.
Provenance: Lowenthal Collection, nr. 148. Paper labels to bird and base. Hans Lowenthal was born in Frankfurt, Germany. His father Julius invented the first semi-automatic lighter in history in 1928 and named it Colibri. In 1953, Hans joined Colibri and was its Managing Director for 25 years.
Condition: Fine condition with good patina, extensive wear, traces of use and tiny nicks here and there. Minor encrustations.
