A TURQUOISE GLAZED TAPIR, QIANLONG
China, 1736-1795. Fine biscuit porcelain with an unctuous, monochrome glaze. Aptly modelled as a recumbent tapir, the head with vivid eyes, highlighted in black, and ears tucked back, thus connecting with the arched spine.
Provenance: Galerie Beauté Chinoise, Alexandre Hougron, Saint Ouen, France (label to base, inscribed “18ème siècle”). The property of a European lady, acquired from the above.
Condition: Excellent condition with old wear and few minor firing flaws. Rare to find in such immaculate preservation!
Weight: 605.6 grams
Dimensions: Length 21 cm
Note the neatly incised details to the claws and the short, curly tail.
Chinese porcelain with a clear turquoise glaze over a biscuit body was exported from the Kangxi period (1662-1722) onwards. The intense color combined with a smooth, shiny glaze was unlike anything produced in Europe at the time.
