A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE PLATE, KANGXI
China, 1662-1722. Vibrantly painted in deep cobalt-blue with a pair of deer seated in a garden under an old, gnarly pine-tree flanked by peony, bamboo and craggy rockwork, surrounded by four cartouches on a diaper ground, the rim decorated with squirrels, grape vine and lotus.

Provenance: From a French estate. Sotheby’s Paris, Art d’Asie, June 12th, 2018, lot 172, bought in at an estimate of 3/5,000 euro.
Condition: Good condition with some fritting to lip as expected on these wares. Some of this may also be regarded as chipping. All of this, however, is almost invisible from the front. Minor old wear, mostly to well. Some firing imperfections. Overall superb, striking appearance!

Plates or basins from this period are rare in this size and excellent preservation. Recessed circular base with raised, unglazed foot rim.
