A CARAMEL GLASS ‘EGGPLANT’ SNUFF BOTTLE
China, 1720-1830. The opaque glass of even color carved in the shape of an eggplant. Small, convex base and cylindric mouth.
Provenance: Hungarian private collection.
Condition: Excellent condition with old wear only.
Stopper: Carved carnelian with metal mounting and old spoon
Weight: 34.3 grams including stopper
Dimensions: Height including stopper 80 mm. Diameter mouth 5 mm.
A range of caramel-colored glass was a popular staple at the Palace workshops during the Qing dynasty, perhaps inspired by similarly colored chalcedony which was also extensively carved at the Palace. Compare a pear-shaped bottle in this rare color, from the Marian Mayer Collection, exhibited by Robert Hall Ltd., Chinese Snuff Bottles II, no. 58.
Auction result comparison: Compare with a related bottle at Sotheby’s New York, March 23rd, 2004, in Chinese Works of Art, lot 34.
