A GELUG SCHOOL THANGKA OF FIVE BUDDHAS
Tibet, late 18th-19th century. Finely painted to depict the golden Buddha holding an alms bowl in the center, accompanied by Amitayus, Kubera, Vajrapani, Hayagriva, two Lamas and four smaller Buddhas.
Provenance: Swiss private collection. Koller auction December 3rd, 2018, lot 150, bought in at an estimate of 3/5.000 Swiss Francs.
Condition: Original unrestored condition with old wear, fading, staining, minor creases and losses. Fine brocade mounting and old silk cover.
Dimensions: 68 x 46 cm (the painting) and 116 x 72 cm (the mounting)
The two Lamas shown in this Thangka are possibly the two principal disciples of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism.
