Description

A copper plaque with the Ascension of Christ Copper panel with monochrome enamel décor “en grisaille” picked out in pale red and gilding, reddish gold counter enamel. With a label that reads "Fürstlich Jsenburg´sches Linienfideicommiss." with "56" in ink and "7" in chalk. The edges slightly chipped, minor old repairs to the upper left, upper centre, and lower right. H 12.9, W 12.2 cm, framed H 29.2, W 25.9 cm. Limoges, second half 16th C. The unknown painter of this panel is thought to have been an artist from the circle of the “IC” monogrammist who created the well known dishes with depictions of the creation story and the expulsion from paradise now housed in the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden (inv. no. III 15, 16). Ulrike Weinhold researched the numerous prints upon which the motifs were based and found that many of them are derived from engravings by Etienne Delaune. The present panel is inspired by a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer from around 1510. However, the artist may not have worked directly from the woodcut, as many details differ, for example the two demi-figures added in the sky. Provenance Counts and Princes of Ysenburg-Büdingen. Private collection, Copenhagen. Literature Cf. Kopenhagener Privatsammlung. Literatur Vgl. Weinhold, Maleremail aus Limoges im Grünen Gewölbe, München-Berlin-Dresden 2008, Nr. 11.
