Four marble reliefs with allegories of the seasons Oval white and brick red marble reliefs depicting groups of putti with attributes. H c. 38, B c. 48 cm. Follower of Gerard van Opstal (1594 or 1597 – 1668), second half 17th C. This rare complete set of four reliefs is attributed to a successor of Gerard van Opstal (Brussels 1594 or 1597 - 1668 Paris). Van Opstal became famous primarily for his finely carved small ivory reliefs, which often depict putti as bacchantes. The Château de Versailles houses a portrait of the artist, who was called to Paris by Cardinal Richelieu some time before 1648, in which he holds a carved ivory tankard in his hands. In the Louvre there are, among other things, two signed reliefs by the artist, and the Victoria and Albert Museum houses another unsigned work (mus. no. A.33-1930). Just like the marble reliefs presented here, these precious carvings depict densely composed groups of cherubs with chubby cheeks and buxom bodies. In the depiction of autumn, ten children are shown playing with a panther and crowning a herm with a faun's head. In spring, nine children weave garlands around a billy goat. The motif of the child lying in the foreground of the scenes, who is either sleeping or has fallen down, appears again and again. The motifs represent both allegories of the seasons and of human folly, personified in the nonsensical but humorous goings-on of the children. Provenance J. Kugel Antiquaire, Paris. Der seltene komplette Satz von vier Reliefs wird der Nachfolge Gerard van Opstals (Brüssel 1594 oder 1597 - 1668 Paris) zugeschrieben. Dieser erlangte Bekanntheit hauptsächlich durch seine feinen kleinen Elfenbeinreliefs, die häufig Putti als Bacchanten darstellen. Die Sammlung im Château de Versailles besitzt ein Porträt des schon vor 1648 von Kardinal Richelieu nach Paris gerufenen Künstlers, auf dem er einen im Relief geschnitzten Elfenbeinhumpen in seinen Händen hält. Im Louvre befinden sich u.a. zwei signierte Exemplare seiner Reliefs, im Victoria and Albert Museum (mus.no. A.33-1930) ein weiteres, nicht signiertes. Diese preziösen Kunstkammerobjekte zeigen genau wie die hier vorgestellten Marmorreliefs dicht komponierte Gruppen von pausbäckigen Kleinkindern mit drallen Körpern. In der Darstellung des Herbstes spielen alleine zehn Kinder mit einem Panther und bekränzen eine Herme mit Faunskopf. Im Frühling sind es neun Kinder, die um einen Ziegenbock Girlanden flechten. Immer wieder taucht das Motiv des unten liegenden Kindes auf, das entweder schläft oder hingefallen ist. Die Szenen beinhalten gleichzeitig eine Allegorie menschlicher Torheit, personifiziert im unsinnigen aber lustigen Treiben der Kinder. Provenienz J. Kugel Antiquaire, Paris. Norditalienische Sammlung.
