Description

Two eglomisé paintings with Dutch views Etched gold and silver foil and polychrome oil painting behind glass. Depicting finely painted manor houses, rivers and figures. Signed "Zeuner. inv. 1773" and "Zeuner. Inv." With unobtrusive localised retouches along the edges, the view of Hofwerk with a slightly more extensive retouched area over water damage in the upper centre. In mahogany veneered frames H 22.4, W 26.9 and H 23, W 27.1 cm. Amsterdam, Jonas Zeuner, 1773 and 1770s. One of the paintings shows Hofwerk, a manor house on the Vecht between the villages of Breukelen and Nieuwersluis. It was often depicted in art as well as on faience, and the motif was probably based on engravings by Daniël Stoopendaal (1672 - 1726). Jonas Zeuner was born in Kassel in 1727. He arrived in Amsterdam in around 1750, hoping to make a living as an artist. He was specialised in a particularly elegant style of reverse glass painting known as eglomisé using etched gold and silver foil. His depictions of buildings and river landscapes with figures form a graceful and effective contrast against the soft, atmospheric oil painting of the sky. The majority of his works are signed and dated between 1770 and 1814. Provenance Auctioned by Sotheby's New York on 23rd September 1998, lot 122. Auctioned by Sotheby's London on 6th December 2012, lot 392. Private collection, Copenhagen. Literature Cf. Ryser, Verzauberte Bilder Die Kunst der Malerei hinter Glas, Munich 1991, p. 270 f. An eglomisé panel signed “Zeuner inv.” with a portrait of Ericus Fridericus Alberti is housed in the Corning Museum of Glass (acc.no. 66.3.5). The same panel can also be found in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-C-1569) as well as five depictions of Dutch landscapes signed by Zeuner. Provenienz Verst. Sotheby's New York am 23 September 1998, Lot 122. Verst. Sotheby's London am 6. Dezember 2012, Lot 392. Kopenhagener Privatsammlung. Literatur Vgl. Ryser, Verzauberte Bilder Die Kunst der Malerei hinter Glas, München 1991, S. 270 f. In der Sammlung des Corning Museum of Glass befindet sich eine "Zeuner inv." signierte Eglomisétafel mit dem Porträt von Ericus Fridericus Alberti (acc.no. 66.3.5). Die gleiche Tafel besitzt das Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (Inv.Nr. SK-C-1569).
