A “pas kontuszowy” kontusz belt Silk in four colours with alternating strips of stylised tendril decor and two carnation flowers at the terminals. The kontusz was a kind of robe of Turkish origin used by the Polish aristocracy in the 17th and 18th century as a way of differentiating their clothing from the fashions worn in the west. The robe was fastened at the hip with an elegantly draped sash which was worn with the plain reverse side showing on weekdays and the sumptuously decorated front showing on Sundays. Kontusz belts were initially imported from abroad. The majority of the first manufactories opened in Poland in the 17th century were founded by Persian migrants who introduced motifs inspired by Safavid silks. By the 18th century, weaving studios specialised in the production of kontusz sashes existed throughout Poland, from Gdansk to Krak?, but the main centres of production were located in the Masovian province and in Slutsk in Belarus. Der Kontusz ist ein Mantel türkischen Ursprungs und wurde vom polnischen Adel im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert getragen, um sich von der westlichen Mode abzusetzen. Er wurde um die Hüfte gebunden mit einer kunstvoll gefalteten Schärpe, deren schlichte Rückseite wochentags nach außen getragen und deren prachtvolle Vorderseite sonntags gezeigt wurde. Zunächst wurden die Kontusz-Gürtel aus dem Ausland importiert. Die ersten polnischen Manufakturen im 17. Jahrhundert wurden meist von Persern gegründet, die ihr von den safawidischen Seiden inspiriertes Motivrepertoire in die Produktion einfließen ließen. Im 18. Jahrhundert gab es auf solche Schärpen spezialisierte Weber in ganz Polen, von Gdansk bis Krakau, das Zentrum lag in Masowien aber auch im weißrussischen Slutsk.
