Framed document signed by John Jay (1745 -1829) dated April 5th 1796 "The People of the State of New York, by the grace of God, free and independent: To Ebenezer McKenzie, Gentleman, Greeting. We, reposing especial trust and confidence, as well in your patriotism, conduct and loyalty, as in your valour and readiness to do us good and faithful service, HAVE appointed and constituted, and by these presents, DO appoint and constitute you the said Ebenezer McKenzie Ensign of a Company in the Regiment of Militia in the County of Orange whereof Seth Marvin Esquire is Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant: YOU are, therefore, to take the said Company into your charge and care as Ensign thereof and duly to exercise the Officers and Soldiers of that Company in arms, who are hereby commanded to obey you as their Ensign..." This document is directly referenced in the 1888 publication "Stony Point Illustrated, and account of the Early Settlements of the Hudson" and notes that McKenzie (approx 1740 - 1832) was "one of the Revolutionary Fathers, having emigrated from the Highlands of Scotland about the year 1760, landing on Nantucket Island, and from thence came to Stony Point in 1776. He served during the eight years of war, and was among the cantonment discharged at Newburg, his discharge bearing the signature of General George Washington. The widow of patriot McKenzie received $1400 pension in 1832."
