A LARGE Japanese Shigaraki Stoneware Storage Jar, Edo Period – Height 54CM. Coated in an uneven natural ash glaze. Wonderfully misshapen in places and with various trapped air bubbles. The old chip to the outer mouth edge possibly intentional in fitting with the idea of the Japanese aesthetic. Jars of this type are notoriously difficult to date as there were made during a very long period but this example most likely dates to the Edo period (c. 17th – 18th Century). Height 54cm. No repair or restoration.
Provenance: from the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton. Reputed to have been purchased during the 1960s.
