Two Large English 19th Century Stoneware Wine Jars, Hawes, Yorkshire. The largest coated in an olive-green glaze with impressions around the shoulder “E.CLARKSON & Co., WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANTS, HAWES, 1406, J.KILBURN MANUFATURER”. Height 44.5cm, (17.5 inches). The other jar coated in a paler green glaze, with incised number “487” and an appliqué impressed “E.CLARKSON & Co., WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANTS, HAWES”. Height 38cm (15 inches).
Hawes is a small market town in North Yorkshire and E.Clarkson & Co. are mentioned in the list of professions and trades for Hawes in Bulmer’s Directory of 1890.
Provenance: from the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
