Bronze with a beautiful age patina. The depiction in high relief of the Virgin Mary on a throne, her feet resting on a crescent moon. The Infant Jesus with the globe on her lap. Flanked by three winged putti on each side, the two lower putti holding her cloak, a putto playing with her hair at the upper left. Several old collection labels and inventory numbers on the back. Two mounting perforations on the upper edge. Dimensions 13.5 x 10 cm.A rare Augsburg plaque, of which just a few specimens in bronze or lead are known to have survived around the world. An identical, fire-gilt plaque can be found in the collection of the Bode Museum in Berlin (DSC03301).The medallist and sculptor Hans Schwarz (1492 - 1550) was first active in Augsburg, later also in Nuremberg, Paris, Poland and at the Danish court. He created a great many distinguished portrait medals of contemporary personages, such as Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, Jacob Fugger, Albrecht Dürer and Hans Burgkmair, and is regarded as one of the most important German medallists of the Renaissance.
