Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 250 to 450 CE. A charming mold-formed pottery figural drinking vessel of a standing chieftain or lord. His body is slightly compressed, and he stands on thick, delineated legs and feet, with hands resting at his rotund sides. The visage is impassive with a broad nose, pursed lips, and almond shaped eyes. His headdress forms the flared mouth that leads to the interior of the cup. All is painted with cream-hued embellishments atop an umber brown ground. This imposing figure may have been created for a member of the elite and placed in their tomb as a grave offering to demonstrate his wealth as he began his journey into the afterlife.
