A ceramic protome formed as a female bust with narrow ovoid face and a thick veil extending across the brow and falling behind the ears; band of curls above the brow, domed eyes and triangular nose, small mouth with pursed lips; hollow to the reverse with mounting hole above; Roman copy of a Greek original; modern mounting rod to the reverse. Cf. similar item in the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession number 26.164.8. 222 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). Property of a Dutch private collector; previously in the collection of Dr Böttger, acquired in the 1960s.
