30 x 262 cm Condition Style of Li Zhaodao (active ca. 713-741), China, ca. 17th ct., Landscape in the Blue and Green Style with Palace Buildings. Handscroll, ink and colours on silk. Unsigned. At the beginning of the scroll seven, at the end thirteen collectors' seals. Inscription on the title slab on the outside: "Highest graded work of the Small General Li (Li Zhaodao)". Li Zhaodao, nickname Small General Li, was the son of Li Sixun (653-718), called the Great General Li. Both were members of the Imperial family of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), high officials and painters. They were considered to have created the so-called blue and green style of Chinese landscape painting. This handscroll shows this typical style of Tang dynasty painting quite well. The mountains are built up with flat, linear forms, filled with heavy colours. In addition, the contour lines are highlighted with lines of gold pigment. This rich and decorative style was especially popular in the early eighth century. The types of some of the palace buildings also derive from that time, for example, the building with the tower-like terrace. Later, in the seventeenth century, this archaic landscape style was popular again and recreated in great number.-Acquired at Lempertz, Cologne, 1st Dec 1983, sale 598, no. 870-Minor old restorations and minor damage due to age
