39 x 200 cm Condition Style of Zhao Yong (1289-after 1360), China, ca. 17th ct., Kublai Khan Hunting with an Entourage. Handscroll, ink and colours on silk. Signature: "Painted in winter in the jiaxu year (1334), Zhao Yong from Wuxing". Two seals: "Seal of Zhao Yong" (Zhao Yong zhi yin), "Zhongmu". Following the painting there are three colophones by Wu Kuan (seals "Songxuezhai", "Wu Kuan zhi yin"), Wang Chong (seal "Neige xueshi) und Jiao Hong (seals "Jiao Hong zhi yin"). This interesting handscroll depicts Kublai Khan in a heavy white fur coat on horseback, accompanied by his favourite woman and a standard bearer. In front of them, a group of four Mongol hunters with falcons and dogs are shown. Behind them, one of two riders is arching towards the sky. The painting copies figures from an original hanging scroll composition by the court painter at the Mongol court, Liu Guandao (act. ca. 1270-1300), dated 1280, now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The figures as well as the animals are painted with great realism and vividness and are rare documents of the life at the Mongol court.-Acquired at Lempertz, Cologne, 18th June 1994, auction 705, no. 95-Minor damage due to age
