159 x 78,8 cm Condition Peacock under a Mispel Tree. China, ca. 18th ct. Hanging scroll, ink and colours on silk. Unsigned, no seals. The painting is a reversed copy of a painting from the Song dynasty (960-1279), attributed to Cui Bo (active ca. 1050-1080), now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. On the original Song painting, the peacock is standing on the tree trunk of the mispel (pipa) tree. The lilies and the small dandelion on the ground are copied from the Song painting. But the latter has a female peacock at the side of the composition which is missing here. Nice painting in a meticulous gongbi style.-Acquired at Klefisch, Cologne, 26th Nov 1994, auction 56, no. 740-Minor folds
