Dimensions: Length: 39.7 Width: 29.7cm, Height: 40.5cmChinese Qing Dynasty Zitan Dressing Case. Made of a large timber rectangle piece thick Zitan wood. The Top open and front opening by panel doors. The box is mounted with ruyi-shaped fittings and lock plate and all the surface carved with wanzi, ruyi, scrolling tendril and five claws imperial dragon soaring amidst flames, vapors, chasing flaming pearl amidst scrolling cumulus clouds, with face toward the heavens. The whole supported on flat rectangles. Zitan is an extremely dense wood which sinks in water. It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified in the Pterocarpus genus. The lumber is blackish-purple in hue, and its fibers are loaded with deep red pigments which have been used for dye throughout the ages. The entirety is encased in amazing relief carving which gives this throne a captivating appearance.
