玉牛整体呈白黄色，圆雕一牛，呈站立状，直视前方，角后依，张嘴，有一横穿孔，可供穿系佩挂，写实传神，神色沉稳，温驯生动，颇具神采。背凹腹鼓，四足挺立，肌肉健硕。《月令》：“季冬，命有司出土牛，以示农耕之早晚”。《礼记·王制》：“天子社稷皆太牢，诸侯社稷皆少牢”。商周时期，牛多作为王和奴隶主祭祀祖先与神灵的“牺牲”，深受统治阶级的喜爱。整体纹饰雕琢粗犷传神，器型厚重，刻工简洁，表现力却极强。参考：《玉苑聚珍·安徽省文物总店玉器藏品集》P55
