剑格为白玉质，油润细腻，满红色，包浆浑厚。剑格呈长方形，菱形断面，中部突起脊，底边由两端向中央倾垂，器一面高浮雕螭孔纹，体态修长，扭身回首，一面碾琢兽面纹，威严庄重。玉具剑一词在《汉书》“匈奴传”和“王莽传”中均有记载：“单于朝，天子赐以玉具剑。”“莽疾，孔休候之，莽缘恩义，进其玉具宝剑，欲以为好。休不肯受”。整体工艺古拙，抛光精良。
