The Kangxi and Yongzheng periods saw colors such as clear glass, white, translucent blue, yellow and of course ruby-red. By the Qianlong period, additional colors included the opaque turquoise of this example and it became a popular color at court for objects, including snuff bottles. ***************************************************************** THE KIM GREEN COLLECTION OF CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLES AND DISHES (PART I) Kim Rene Green (March 2, 1958 – January 21, 2017) bought her first snuff bottle in China in 1985 while on an official government tour. Always intrepid, as many collectors are, Kim was waiting in Hong Kong to begin her honeymoon when her husband, Jim Pastorick, a naval officer, was delayed on his . Kim, who started her professional life as a trained geologist and geochemist, and eventually became a director of the Office of the Chief Scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, decided to go on a tour to China. In the official government souvenir store, Kim was attracted to her first snuff bottle marketed as jade but assumed by Kim to be agate. That was not the case either, as the bottle turned out to be glass in imitation of agate. It was not until Kim returned to the U.S. and closely examined the bottle that she realized it was glass. Lot 160, a 'sandwich' glass bottle with its swirls of color perhaps imitating tortoiseshell, is typical of Kim's liking for one material resembling another. In 1987, Kim joined the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society. Kim and Jim were active members of the society, attending many conventions and helping in various ways behind the scenes. Kim was a board director from 2003–2008 and again from 2009–2014, and vice-president from 2006–2008. Kim, with Jim, after meeting and forming friends with dealers Clare Chu, Robert Hall, the late Robert Kleiner, and Hugh Moss, decided upon their advice, to keep their collection of bottles to a relatively small, but select, group.
