These two lines areposed based on an earlier phrase ci bu zhangbing, yi bu zhangcai (a merciful andpassionate heart should not control the army, a chivalric nature cannot manage wealth) quoted from the book Zengguang Xianwen (Extended Collection of Excellent Ancient Articles). It is not clear who should be credited for the book. The book name first appeared in a Ming dynasty tragedy play Mudan Ting (The Peony Pavilion) during the Wanli period, and it had been edited and amended multiple times during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
