A ZITAN 'CHILONG' BOX AND COVER, QING DYNASTY China, 1750-1850. Of circular form with straight sides, the cover slightly domed and carved with a sinuous chilong grasping its tail. The chilong's mane, face, and spine are finely incised. The zitan wood is overall of a rich reddish-black tone and shows an attractive grain with distinct crab's claw marks.

Provenance: British trade.
Condition: Very good condition with some old wear from extensive handling, few expected age cracks and small nicks, light surface scratches. Naturally grown patina with an unctuous feel to the surface.

清代紫檀螭龍紋蓋盒
中國，1750-1850年。圓盒，直邊，蓋子略呈圓頂，刻有一條蜿蜒的螭龍抓自己的尾巴，身形矯健，細節精湛。 紫檀整體呈濃郁的紅黑色調，紋路誘人，蟹爪紋明顯。
