笔筒取竹一段，直筒。外壁采用薄地阳文浮雕法刻画刘海戏金蟾。刘海敞衣袒腹，咧嘴而笑，信步缓行，憨态可掬，与地上所伏三足金蟾对视。雕刻技法精细，如衣褶、松枝、帚梢等，大开大阖，线条峻急有力，脸庞五官端正，细发如丝，则极为写实。纵观笔筒色泽深沉光润，刻工精致细腻，形象传神，包浆自然亮丽。竹丝之素地，与人物肌肤润泽上有精镂细琢之文图，形成对比，相映生色。笔筒上镶嵌红木口，下承红木三足藕节形底，是一件清代极佳的竹制作品。
