Finely worked overlay of fire-gilt bronze for a single shield boss. 24 clasps, eight of them lost, around the central boss. Perforated mounting lugs at the base of the clasps, decorative knobs on the sides. Central perforation on the boss, seven small perforations all around, one of which with a preserved flower-shaped rivet. Bent, incomplete. Measures approx. 7.5 x 11 cm.Rare decorative fitting of a knight's shield from the time of the Battle of Hastings.Condition: III - IV
