Pre-Columbian, northern highlands of Peru, Recuay culture, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A fascinating pottery vessel of miniature form displaying a round base, a flattened, ovoid body, a narrow neck, and a flared rim, all flanked by a pair of petite lug handles with horizontal drill holes. Embellished with burnt orange decoration on a creamy yellow ground, the ancient jug is painted with the face of a jaguar on either side, presenting target-motif eyes, an open mouth with sharp teeth, perky ears, and a spotted face.
