Pre-Columbian, northern highlands of Peru, Recuay culture, ca. 200 to 600 CE. An impressive hand-built pottery figural vessel presenting a flat base, an apple-form body, a round shoulder, and a conical spout. The figure's head rises from the shoulder of the vessel displaying large, annular eyes, a curved nose, a straight mouth, and a short beard, which he holds in both his hands, all capped by a helmet-like headdress that attaches in the back to the spout via a narrow handle. His attenuated arms lie across his chest, both bent at the elbows, while his legs are drawn up below him. A slender, recessed band divides the figure horizontally as elaborate geometric motifs of red paint on cream-colored ground adorn the entirety of the piece.
