Fine-painted late Gothic interior with window view of a city; engrossed in a document a scholar surrounded by books, documents and seals. Canvas reverse inscribed "Prof. Harald Friedrich..." and titled "Between folios". Friedrich, the grandson of Caspar David Friedrich, studied at the Academy in Dresden (under Pohle and Pauwels) and worked in the studio of A. von Werner. Since 1895 he was professor in Hanover.
